Raising Chickens (Frugal Chat #2)

How Frugal do you think it is to raise Chickens? (either meat chickens or egg layers)

*****************************************************************

I have wanted some pet chickens for some time (for their eggs), I myself don’t eat much eggs or meat but thought it would be great to have some for my son and hubby as well as for baking (with their eggs hehe)

Question…

1.What are some of the benefits of owning chickens?
2.What are some not so fun things about owning chickens? (hey we gotta talk about the good, bad and ugly stuff too LOL)
3. What is a good friendly breed and good layers for first time owners?

Answers

#1. Some benefits of owning your own chickens is obviously you get fresh eggs everyday. It’s like your supermarket… I have never owned a chicken YET, but I am sure in the long run they save you money. Yes you gotta buy feed for them but in turn they eat certain scraps, bugs, mice and lots more. Most are gentle and loving so they also make a great pet. Not to forget to mention you know exactly what they are fed and how well they are treated!!!

#2. Again I have never owned a chicken but have seen some not so nice stuff, like eggs getting stuck up there, diseases, predators and more

#3. I heard that the Barred Rocks were a gentle breed, but I would love to hear your ideas and what has worked for you. Please let me know in the comments below.

I hope you enjoyed this list and please feel free to add your own ideas in the comments below and I would be more than happy to add them to the list 🙂
