August. That wonderful time of year when the garden is nearing it’s harvest and the canning kits come out of storage for some Winter canning or pantry stocking. Whatever you like to call it, it’s the joy of knowing that you grew (or a local farmer grew) and canned these tasty, chemical free foods yourself that makes it all worth it! Since we don’t have a very wide growing season here, 3 months roughly, we buy what we have to from our local produce farm and use what we can from our own garden.
There’s quite the abundance of fresh veggies, fruit and herbs where we go so it’s not very hard to find everything that we’re looking for or needing and it’s a family owned farm so the staff gets used to seeing repeat customers and they’re extremely friendly and helpful.
As you can see from the photo above, we managed to get almost everything that we needed for a day or two of canning. We did need more beets and grabbed a few other things at the same time but the others were just fresh veggies to eat such as turnips, broccoli and lettuce.
What was canned so far:
• 5-500ml jars of pickles + 1-125ml jar
• 9-250ml jars of strawberry jam
• 5-250ml jars of beets + 1-500ml jar
• 6-500ml jars of strawberry topping
• 6-500ml jars of peaches + 1-250ml jar
This is just the beginning of our pantry stocking as we plan on trying out a few other recipes with the harvest that we get from our tomato, onion, pepper and cucumber plants this fall and we’ll more than likely be visiting our local produce farm before their season is done. *Remember: buying local helps feed the families of hard working farmers. Try to buy local during the growing season.
